Newt Gingrich is an American politician, who served as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives (1995–98); Newt Gingrich was the first Republican to hold the office in 40 years. In 1961, Newt Gingrich graduated from Baker High School in Columbus. Hailed as Time’s “Man of the Year” in 1995 and touted by some historians as this century’s most influential Speaker, U. S. Representative Newt Gingrich held on to his Speaker’s post by a narrow margin of only three votes in 1997. Newt Gingrich ran for president in 2012, winning the Republican primaries in South Carolina and Georgia that year. Newt Gingrich suspended his campaign in May 2012 and endorsed Mitt Romney. In 1974, Gingrich made his first bid for political office as the Republican candidate in Georgia’s 6th congressional district in north-central Georgia.
